Enhanced Lubrication Seal Sizes

Enhanced Lubrication (EL) Seals incorporate the most aggressive bi-directional hydrodynamic wave geometries that have been developed. They were initially created for use in high pressure rotary shaft seal applications such as oilfield rotating control devices (RCDs) and high pressure hydraulic swivels. The increased hydrodynamic lubrication of the dynamic surface significantly increases the pressure, speed, and abrasion resistance capability of these rotary seals. The increased lubrication also makes it possible to lubricate much wider dynamic lip widths, compared to Wide Footprint Seals. The wider lip width of this high-pressure seal design further increases its ability to resist extrusion damage and abrasive wear, which are important attributes for an RCD seal. The tables below cover five different lip widths of enhanced lubrication seals. Additional seal diameters can be furnished, subject to a one-time tooling charge to help defray associated engineering, machining, and setup expenses.

The wave geometry of this unique rotary shaft seal design can be customized to provide maximum performance for the allowable hydrodynamic pumping related seal leakage of the application. Four EL wave types have been developed ranging from moderate to maximum hydrodynamic lubrication. See handbook chapter C5 for additional information.

For optimum abrasion resistance, lubricant pressure or spring force is needed to provide the proper seal orientation in the gland.
